PBIS: POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORT

WHAT IS PBIS?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. There are 3 levels: Tier I supports are universal (for all students), Tier II supports are for some students that include things like counseling groups or peer tutoring and Tier III supports are for a few students who need individualized help.

The Rialto High School PBIS Team has developed 5 committees that brings together staff, students, parents and community members to bring innovative changes to our campus. If you would like to join one of our committees or have more questions about when and where they meet please contact one of the facilitators listed below!

PBIS at RHS

BUILDING PBIS INTO OUR SCHOOL

2015/2016 we kicked off the process with a short play by our students and PBIS team.  We broke into smaller groups and got to know some of our colleagues that we might not work with regularly.  Together we identified the current “hot topics/behaviors” that as a staff we would like to see addressed.  At another small group meeting, we sorted the behaviors into categories. 

2016/2017 we took the categories and the assigned behaviors in them and come up with the BIG IDEAS of Responsibility, Respect, and School Pride.  We worked collaboratively to develop the Matrices that will rolled out 2nd semester.  We also created PBIS Committees that worked diligently 2nd semester!

TIPS AND TRICKS YOU CAN USE

Classroom Norms: First Quarter may be coming to a close, but it’s never too late to revisit classroom norms. Engage students in a discussion about how students should act and how they can all work to enforce those expectations. 

 

What helps you to learn while you are in class?      
What stops you from learning?
      
What are some things we can agree on related to how we will all treat each other?
      
How will we respond if someone fails to keep those agreements?

 

Knight 4.pngPositive Affirmations: Starting the day off right can change everything. If you like hearing kind words, make sure you use them on your kids: “Please and Thank You, I am so glad you are here, Great Job, I am so proud of you!”
 

Affective Questions: These 5 magic questions can change a confrontation into a discussion. When a situation arises with a student either talk about these or have them answer them in writing:

1.    What happened?

2.    What were you thinking at the time?

3.    What have you thought about since?

4.    Who has been effected?

5.    What needs to happen to make things right?

WHAT IS NCTI?

Staff on the National Curriculum Training Institute (NCTI) have been certified as facilitators for the Crossroads and Real Colors programs and are able to run support groups for things like Anger Management, Truancy, and Drugs and Alcohol.
